Nine days can connect Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Tiger Leaping Gorge and Shangri-La, but ten days is the more comfortable first-time route. Travel south to north, give Dali and Lijiang at least two nights each, use Tiger Leaping Gorge as a purposeful transfer day, and protect the tenth day for connections, winter weather or altitude adjustments.
This route works because each stop has a different job: Kunming is the transport gateway; Dali slows the journey around Erhai and Bai culture; Lijiang adds Naxi heritage and mountain options; Shangri-La changes the landscape, culture and elevation. It should feel progressively different, not like four old towns placed in a row.
Who is this route for?
It suits first-time international visitors, couples, families and small private groups who want a broad view of Yunnan without turning every day into a transfer. It is also a practical base for travel advisors building a boutique or four-star itinerary with English-speaking guides and no compulsory shopping.
Nine days is less suitable for travellers who want a full Tiger Leaping Gorge trek, several remote villages, slow photography mornings or significant mobility support. Those priorities require more time or fewer bases.

A realistic 10-day Yunnan route
Day 1 — Arrive in Kunming. Keep the first day flexible around the actual flight or train. A local neighbourhood, market or Dianchi Lake walk is enough after arrival.
Day 2 — Kunming and one clear regional experience. Choose a city-and-food day or a carefully timed Stone Forest excursion. Do not add both simply because they appear on a standard checklist.

Days 3–4 — Dali and Erhai. Use two nights to combine the old town with a village, lake edge, local craft or slower countryside experience. Dali should create breathing room before the northern highlands.

Days 5–6 — Lijiang beyond the busiest lane. Include the UNESCO old-town context, but also consider Baisha or Shuhe, Naxi culture and a mountain-view day matched to weather and ticket availability.

Day 7 — Tiger Leaping Gorge to Shangri-La. Treat the road as part of the experience. A viewpoint, short walk and longer hike are different products. Continue to Shangri-La and keep the first evening gentle.

Days 8–9 — Shangri-La. Use one day for Tibetan highland culture around Dukezong and Songzanlin, and another for Pudacuo, a village or a landscape-led experience according to season and energy.

Day 10 — Departure or protected buffer. Depart from Shangri-La when schedules work, or return toward Lijiang or Kunming. This day protects the trip from building every connection on the narrowest margin.
What changes in February?
February can deliver clear winter atmosphere, but the final route must be checked against current road, park, temperature and flight conditions. Travellers need warmer clothing and should not assume every mountain or hiking experience operates as it does in another season. Keep one route component adjustable until the actual date is confirmed.
How should altitude change the pace?
Moving from Kunming through Dali and Lijiang before Shangri-La creates a more gradual progression, but it cannot guarantee that a traveller will avoid altitude symptoms. A practical plan protects the first highland evening, allows enough sleep and hydration, and keeps a low-intensity fallback instead of forcing a performance or long night out.
Three mistakes that make Yunnan feel rushed
Counting cities but hiding transfers. Check-out, stations, road time, luggage and check-in consume real hours.
Making every old town the same experience. Dali, Lijiang and Dukezong need different stories, landscapes and activities or the journey becomes repetitive.
Treating Tiger Leaping Gorge as one product. A roadside viewpoint, short scenic walk and multi-day trek require different timing, equipment and risk planning.
Should you choose nine days or ten?
Choose nine days when arrival and departure times are efficient, the group accepts early starts and no major trek is required. Choose ten days for families, older travellers, winter travel, photography, distinctive hotels, or anyone who prefers one meaningful experience over a long checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Is 9 days enough for Yunnan?
Yes for a compact Kunming–Dali–Lijiang–Shangri-La journey when transfers are efficient. Ten days is more comfortable and creates a real buffer.
Should I travel from Kunming to Shangri-La or in reverse?
For many first-time travellers, moving north through Dali and Lijiang creates a clearer route and more gradual elevation progression. Actual flights may justify the reverse.
Can Tiger Leaping Gorge fit between Lijiang and Shangri-La?
Yes when the chosen experience matches the day. A viewpoint or short walk can fit a transfer day; a serious hike needs a different itinerary.
