How Many Days for Chengdu and Chongqing? A 5–7 Day Itinerary

Choose a realistic day split, protect the hotel-to-hotel transfer, and plan for Chongqing’s hills.

Allow six or seven calendar days for a first Chengdu–Chongqing trip if you want both cities without changing hotels every night. Five days can work with useful arrival and departure times and no major out-of-town excursions. With only three or four usable days, choose one city or accept a short introduction to both. These are First Landing’s planning recommendations, not minimum admission requirements.

Count sightseeing time, not just dates on a calendar. A late arrival on day one and an early flight on day five leave roughly three useful days. A fast train connects the cities, but checkout, station transfers, security, the rail journey and check-in still interrupt sightseeing.

Is five days enough, or should you allow seven?

5 days: a selective introduction

Suitable when both ends of the trip leave usable time. Keep to the two cities, one panda visit and selected neighbourhoods. Skip a sequence of Leshan, Wulong and Dazu day trips.

6 days: room for both cities

Use three nights in Chengdu and two in Chongqing, with one hotel change. Protect the transfer day and an evening for Chongqing’s river views.

7 days: add one priority

Add one well-chosen excursion or a slower city day. Decide which matters most before adding travel: archaeology, a mountain landscape, or more time for food and neighbourhoods.

3–4 usable days: narrow the scope

One city usually offers a better rhythm. If seeing both is essential, keep the route central and make the trade-off explicit: fewer visits and less flexibility.

How should you divide the time?

Chengdu works well for a panda visit, teahouses, food and a less compressed city rhythm. Chongqing adds river views, layered urban neighbourhoods and a different relationship between streets, bridges and hills. Choose the split by your interests and walking comfort rather than assuming the two cities offer interchangeable experiences.

A six-day route with one hotel change

  1. Day 1 — Arrive in Chengdu. Transfer to the hotel; make a nearby meal or short stroll the only fixed activity. A morning arrival can create extra time, but do not sell it as a full day automatically.
  2. Day 2 — Panda visit and a quieter afternoon. Check the panda base’s current reservation and visitor information. Keep the later part of the day for a teahouse or nearby district rather than another distant attraction.
  3. Day 3 — Chengdu at your own depth. Choose food, neighbourhoods and culture. If an excursion is essential, it replaces this day’s city programme; it is not an extra item squeezed into the evening.
  4. Day 4 — Move to Chongqing. Check out, transfer to the named station, take the selected train and continue to the hotel. Plan one compact afternoon area and an evening view only if arrival and energy allow.
  5. Day 5 — One side of Chongqing at a time. Group visits geographically, allow for elevation changes and keep breaks. A viewpoint, a neighbourhood and a meal can make a stronger day than a checklist of photo stops.
  6. Day 6 — Depart. Match the last activity to the actual station or airport and luggage plan. For seven days, add a slower full day or one excursion before departure.

This is an illustrative pacing framework. It does not promise train times, attraction availability or a fixed departure. Reverse it when your international or domestic connections make Chongqing the better arrival city.

Why the train ride is not the whole transfer

Search the official China Railway 12306 timetable for your travel date and the exact stations. Chengdu East and Chongqing’s North, West and Shapingba are different locations; a faster train is not automatically the best hotel-to-hotel connection. Do not use an article about a new railway under construction as proof that its advertised journey time is already bookable.

Build the transfer in five parts: hotel checkout and luggage → road or metro to the departure station → entry and boarding buffer → your booked rail service → arrival-station transfer and hotel check-in. Our recommendation is to protect roughly half a day in the itinerary until the actual service and both hotel locations are chosen. That is a planning allowance, not a railway journey duration.

A Chongqing day trip from Chengdu is a different product from a two-city stay. It adds a return transfer and may cut short the evening. If the night cityscape is your main reason to visit, an overnight stay usually fits that aim better.

What changes when travelling with older parents?

Age alone does not determine the route. Ask about comfortable walking duration, stairs, standing in queues and the need for frequent breaks. In Chongqing, two nearby map pins can sit at different elevations. A hotel marked “central” may still have an awkward vehicle approach or steps between the drop-off and lobby.

  • Confirm the actual vehicle drop-off, entrance and lift route with the chosen hotel.
  • Choose one compact area per outing; use short vehicle transfers where appropriate.
  • Check attraction-specific access instead of calling an entire city or itinerary wheelchair accessible.
  • Keep wet-weather and rest alternatives. Drop a stop rather than convert every rest period into another transfer.

Where should you stay?

Choose a Chengdu base around your main city visits and realistic access to your departure station. In Chongqing, a central district such as Yuzhong can help with core city visits, while a station-area hotel may suit a specific rail connection. Neither is automatically best: compare the real door-to-door journeys, slope, entrance and room requirements. Avoid changing hotels merely to save a small distance to one attraction.

Does every meal have to be spicy?

No: discuss spice tolerance and dietary requirements when planning meals, then confirm with each restaurant. A regional-food itinerary can include tea, breakfast and dishes chosen for the party. Do not treat a request for less chilli as a guarantee about allergens or cross-contact.

Questions before booking

Should we fly in and out of the same city?

An arrival in one city and departure from the other can remove a return intercity leg. Compare flight convenience and the complete ground route before deciding; the open-jaw option is not always cheaper.

Can we add Jiuzhaigou, Leshan and Wulong?

Each adds travel and visiting time. On a short two-city trip, pick one priority or extend the trip. They should not be treated as quick stops beside a central city hotel.

What information makes a useful trip brief?

Arrival and departure times and places, party size and ages, comfortable walking time, must-see interests, hotel preference and any dietary requirements. State whether five or seven days includes your flight days.

Updated 16 October 2026 by First Landing Travel Team. Visitor discussions raise six-day pacing with older parents and the limits of a Chongqing day trip. They identify questions, not official transport rules. Check China Railway 12306 for dated services, Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding for current visitor information, and Chongqing’s tourism information for destination context.

Our day allocations, half-day transfer allowance and hotel-selection checks are planning judgments for this example. No current train departure, fare or access guarantee is asserted.
