Can You Use Google Maps in China? Best Map Apps for a First Trip

Use a local navigation app, save each address in Chinese and keep an offline route backup.

Short answer: do not make Google Maps your only navigation tool in mainland China. Before leaving the airport, make sure mobile data works, match your hotel pin to its Chinese address, and save the first route offline. Use Amap or Baidu Maps for current local routing; iPhone users can keep Apple Maps as an English-friendly fallback.

Before you leave the airport

  1. Connect: confirm your eSIM or roaming data works away from airport Wi-Fi.
  2. Match: compare the hotel pin with its Chinese name, address, district and phone number.
  3. Save: screenshot the route, station exit or pickup point before the transfer.

The three-layer map plan

  1. Live navigation: Amap or Baidu Maps for local routes and place data.
  2. Readable fallback: Apple Maps on iPhone or the official Nihao China app's English map interface.
  3. Offline proof: Chinese address cards, saved pins and screenshots for your hotel and first-day stops.

Why Google Maps should be a reference, not the whole plan

A familiar interface is useful for orientation, but local place listings, entrances, transit routes and opening details may not match what you find on the ground. A first-time visitor needs an app used by local transport and merchants, plus a separate address record that does not depend on one provider.

Which map app is best for which job?

Amap (Gaode)Local driving, walking, transit and current points of interestParts of the interface may require translation

Build a Chinese address card for every important stop

For each hotel, station, airport pickup and booked attraction, keep the Chinese name, full Chinese address, phone number, nearest metro station and exit, and one map pin. A driver can read the card even when your spoken pronunciation or mobile data fails.

Test the route in this order after landing

  1. Confirm mobile data works before leaving the terminal.
  2. Search the hotel using its Chinese name and compare the phone number or district.
  3. Match the selected pin with the address on your booking.
  4. Save the route and take a screenshot before a long transfer.
  5. Test one short route before depending on the app for the rest of the day.

Airport, metro and taxi details that prevent wrong turns

  • Airports and stations: save the exact terminal or station name; large cities can have several.
  • Metro: save the station exit, not only the station name.
  • Hotels: match the Chinese address and phone number because English names can be similar.
  • Attractions: check the correct visitor entrance; the nearest pin is not always the ticket entrance.
  • Taxis: show the Chinese address card rather than an English hotel name alone.

What to keep offline

Take screenshots of the airport-to-hotel route, the hotel address card, your first booked attraction and the return route to the hotel. Also save the local travel team's phone number. One app is convenient; two independent backups keep the trip moving.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Google Maps in mainland China?

It can help with pre-trip orientation, but it should not be your only live navigation source. Prepare a local map app and offline address records.

Which app should I install first?

Choose Amap or Baidu Maps for local navigation. If you use an iPhone, keep Apple Maps as a readable fallback. The official Nihao China app also offers an English map interface for selected visitor services.

Should I search in English or Chinese?

Try English first when the app supports it, then use the Chinese place name from your booking. The Chinese name, district and phone number are the safest way to distinguish similar results.

What if the pin and booking address disagree?

Do not leave immediately. Compare the phone number and district, ask the hotel or local travel team to confirm the pin, and keep the corrected location offline.

Planning note: app interfaces, language support and local service coverage change. Recheck the current app-store listing and your exact hotel, station and attraction before departure.
